You are making a permanent change to your face---do your research!

This subject is actually what prompted us to write this book. We have only been in our new studio for 14 months, but have both seen and heard countless horror stories. The cosmetic work being done nationwide is simply unacceptable, but dentists are getting away with it because patients don't realize that what can actually be done. We cannot stress enough the importance of doing research before choosing a smile makeover dentist. Get a several consults and bring along a list questions to ask the doctor. Only when you are satisfied and feel confident and comfortable in your choice, should you proceed.

We have listed at least10 things to look for when choosing a smile makeover dentist. We have put it in this book in several different forms. It is that important that we would rather have you read about more than once.

There have some wonderful developments in cosmetic dentistry. Two such products are Lumineers and Cerec. Both have changed the way many dentists practice and Lumineers has done a terrific job at marketing their product. Both have their place in certain situations, but certainly shouldn't be used in all situations.

Lumineers does mislead the public. They state in their ads that no tooth structure needs to be removed, but if you read closely at the fine print, it states that .5mm may need to be removed. This is what a veneer preparation is. They state that it is reversible. We have seen patients who had Lumineers removed because they hated how bulky it made their teeth look, and their teeth were not the same as before they were placed. Lastly, the top cosmetic dentists in the world agree that only 2% of cases are actually good candidates for no-prep veneers, so many dentists are compromising the esthetics of patient's smiles. Lumineers ship their cases to China, to be made in a cookie cutter fashion that adds to the artificial and bulky look of Lumineers. We offer no prep or minimal prep veneers for our patients, but use a top notch lab to hand craft each one so they look natural.

Cerec boasts one day smile makeovers. It sounds exciting and may be great for back teeth where the esthetics isn't as critical, but be careful. Cerec does not look or feel as natural as porcelain. With getting your new veneers in one day, you don't get to test drive your smile to be sure you love the color and shapes on your face. Cerec should not be placed on front teeth, it's a big compromise, so look at many after photos up close to be sure that it is acceptable to you.
